If you are looking for economical and authentic Indian food in Johor Bahru, do try out Amma Restuarant. It is located besides Tropical Inn Hotel and opposite Doubletree by Hilton. The restaurant serves both vegetarian and non vegetarian Indian food.
My recommendation is the Roti prata or roti canai with egg and onions – RM3 It is really good. I had also ordered the Mutton meal set – RM11 and Curry fish meal – RM11. Masala tea was RM2.50 and Lemon Juice was RM4. The mutton and curry set were with plain white rice.
I was told by the staff that if I wanted to order set meal with Biryani rice, I have to come early; as it sell out fast. The biryani rice set meal will cost slighter more. I will try it on my next trip before lunch hour.
By the way, I was there at 5pm that day and service was fast. The Amma Restaurant is fully air conditioned and clean. Take note there is a GST of 6% payable but no service charge fee.
Went to visit the Tulipmania floral display located at the Flower Dome at Gardens by the Bay. I visited this floral display on a weekday, so it wasn’t crowded.
There were more than 40 types of tulips on display based on magical fairy tales theme. On display were aLittle Red Riding Hood, Snow White’s Cottage, Rapunzel’s Tower, Cinderalla’s pumpkin carriage, etc. Still what attracts me were the colorful bright tulips at the garden.
Tulipmania seems to be a annual event at Gardens by the Bay. I will visit again next year. Here are the photos of Tulipmania – enjoy.
Stayed at the Doubletree by Hilton hotel in Johor Bahru – for a short break. The location of the hotel was slightly remote – away from the main street of Jalan Wong Ah Fook. Yet the hotel was still within walking distance of Komtar JBCC Mall and City Square Mall. I took about 10 minutes to walk from Komtar JBCC to arrive at Doubletree by Hilton hotel.
Check in was quick and there was a request for a deposit of RM150 for incidental charges, if any. I booked the double double room and was glad to be given a high floor. The room itself was spacious, clean and welcoming. I liked the design of the carpet – nice. And yes, I was given the Hilton famous warm cookie which was tasty.
The beds were firm; and there were sufficient pillows given. The LCD TV was a 40″ if I guessed it correctly. There was small radio clock – for those who needed an alarm wake up call. The small fridge or mini bar was empty and I liked it this way. I liked to buy and stocked up on my favorite drinks and yogurt.
The bathroom design is unique. There is a clear glass panel in the shower area that separates the bathroom from the bedroom. So if I am taking a shower, I can have a clear view of the bedroom and vice versa. Great for couples and lovers. However, for room mates and friends, you can simply press the button and the blinds would be lowered. Bathroom amenities were sufficient and of good quality.
The breakfast starts from 6.30 am and ends at 10.30 am. Overall, the breakfast spread were sufficient. I liked the fresh fruit juices counter and the noodles with herbal soup. And the otak otak ( grilled fish cake) and roti prata was good. Just off the topic – do try the roti prata at the Amma Unavagam restaurant located opposite this hotel. They served the best Roti prata with delicious Indian curry.
Overall, I have a relaxing and enjoyable stay at Doubletree by Hilton at Johor Bahru. I will be coming back soon to try out their King Size bedroom and their Gym / swimming pool.
There is a very interesting exhibit of balloon sculptures that transformed the atrium of Marina Square mall into a Land of Dinosaurs. I think this is the largest balloon sculptures exhibit I have ever seen in Singapore.
The balloon dinosaurs includes the mighty T-Rex, Stegosaurus, cute baby dinosaurs, Triceratops, etc. I am also impressed with the wild landscape made entirely with balloons. The balloon flowers were bright and very creative.
Really enjoyed viewing this Dinosaur Balloons exhibit, hopefully the Marina Square mall will do it again next year. Here are some of the photos; hope you liked them.
I was at Changi Airport and interestingly saw an exhibit of Hobbit Hole which is part of Naturally New Zealand exhibition. Naturally this exhibition attracted lots of kids with their parents as it was also the start of a week long school vacation.
Here are photos of the exhibits which I took. I particularly liked the black bicycle – it has the cool black classical look. There is also an autographed rugby ball of the New Zealand All Blacks Squad.
I visited the Komtar JBCC Mall in Johor Bahru in August 2014 when it was still under construction. I revisited it again last Sunday and it was good to see more shops up and running in this mall. Compared to the next door neighbour City Square Mall, this mall is relatively quiet. You can access Komtar JBCC via a connected walkway linking the 2 malls together.
Many of the retail stores that are in Komtar JBCC are not found in City Square Mall. Komtar JBCC have more upmarket tenants such as Chanel, Estee Lauder, Victoria’s Secret, Crabtree & Evelyn, etc. Some of my favorite stores in this mall are Bath & Body Works, Haagen Dazs and Kapitan Supermarket.
For kids, there is the Angry Birds Activity Park located at Level 3. This is the entertainment center for kids with fun games, rides and theme attractions. Komtar JBCC adds a new level of shopping experience for shoppers – it is more upmarket, chic and stylish. I will visit this mall more often.
Finally, the 1600 Pandas Malaysia Tour had arrived at City Square, Johor Bahru. It was a short exhibition for 3 days only; and some of my friends are not able to visit it due to work / personal commitment.
So I have took time off to visit this 1600 Pandas exhibition and share photos of the pandas with friends and those who are keen. The numerous pandas were placed on the floor which make it difficult to view. It would be more ideal if they were placed on an elevated platform.
The intent of this exhibition is to spread the awareness of environment conservation. These cute pandas can be adopted (bring home) at a price. Anyway, I am happy that I visited this exhibition – it is a worthwhile visit.
