KSL City Mall in Johor Bahru

There is a brand new shopping mall in Johor Bahru and it is called the KSL City Mall. The location of this mall is located at Taman Century near the old Holiday Plaza shopping mall. The nearest hotels located next to the new KSL City shopping mall is 11@Century Hotel which is just opposite this mall; and of course the Mutiara Hotel which is next to Holiday Plaza mall. If you intend to stay overnight, these 2 hotels are comfortable. Mutiara Hotel is a four star hotel with swimming pool and gym, whereas 11@ Century Hotel is a small boutique hotel. You can read my reviews of these 2 hotels in my previous blogs and view photos at our website at –  ImageSingapore.com

For convenience sake, I just took a taxi from City Square Mall and it cost RM$7/- and ten minutes ride. Most taxi drivers are already familiar with this new KSL City mall, so there is no problem at all. The mall was opened in mid December 2010 and there is still an ongoing construction going on to build a hotel and condominium units beside this mall. I was there on a Sunday at about noon and it was crowded with locals and Singaporeans.  The first glimpse of the retail stores are Pizza Hut and KFC outlets.  The KFC outlet at KSL City mall is spacious with enough tables and chairs to accommodate customers. However the ordering counter was rather small and cramped and there was a long queue of people standing to buy their food.  The air in the KFC restaurant was hot and stuffy due to the smoke coming out from the kitchen.  Hopefully the people at KFC can fixed this problem to make dining at more pleasant experience.

KSL City Mall Johor Bahru

The new KSL City mall is not totally ready for business as there are many retail stores that are still under renovation. The anchor tenant is Tesco hypermarket and it was still under renovation. I saw Breadtalk and ToastBox, Tangshifu restaurant, Watsons, retail shops selling clothes, games, shoes and many beauty and hair salons. The MBO cinemas in this mall was very crowded and there was a long queue at the ticketing counters. I am not able to really get a feel of this mall as many shops were still not ready for business. But there is one thing that I am not impressed about and it was the air condition. I felt warm when I browsed and walked in this mall. Yes, it was crowded but the temperature at the mall should be set lower so that it is more comfortable to shop in this mall without feeling warm and stuffy. If you compare City Square Mall with this mall, the City Square Mall is definitely a really cool place to be in. I don’t liked to sweat and feel warm when I am do my shopping – and many people would definitely agree to this.  Another complaint is that there are not even a single seat for customers to rest in the public area or inside the mall itself. Why must KSL City mall be so unfriendly to customers who just need a rest without having to go to a restaurant to buy a cup of coffee or drink? The management of this mall should take care of its customers with ample seats for the tired shoppers and elderly; and a cool environment please

KSL City Mall in Johor Bahru

I intend to go back to KSL City Mall again when Tesco hypermarket is open. Hopefully in a few months from now, the mall will be fully operational and there will be more shops to browse. Overall this mall is spacious and many individual stores were quite large in size. In certain areas of the mall, the lighting is quite dim that makes it quite uncomfortable to walk and browse. There is no fountain, ponds, mini gardens, trees or benches around the mall to make it look more green and relaxing.  Like many other similar malls in Johor Bahru, is simply a concept of a shopping mall where you come to shop and eat – that is it. Outside this mall ( just cross the road ) there are many old coffee shops selling delicious and cheap food. Some of the food stalls in the coffee shops are quite famous – like the Pontian Wanton Mee which opens 24 hours; and there is also a coffee shop that served good porridge and char kway teow. To get back to City Square or immigration, just hop a taxi back from the entrance of KSL City mall ( near Pizza Hut ).

My Stay at Dorsett Regency Hotel Kuala Lumpur

I decided to stay at the Dorsett Regency Hotel in Bukit Bintang when I was in Kuala Lumpur.  Though this is a relatively small hotel, it is well situated in Bukit Bintang shopping district.  I arrived at the hotel at about 1 pm and was told by the staff at the reception counter that the room was not ready until after 2 pm. So I decided to leave my luggage with the concierge and decided to go to Lot 10 shopping mall to take my lunch. My impression when I stepped into this hotel was that the lobby was totally outdated and worn out. It still have the look of the eighties and seriously in need of a refurbishment to upgrade the image of this four star hotel.  This gave me a first impression of not to expect much from this hotel since the lobby already looked so worn out.

After lunch and a walk around Bukit Bintang shopping malls, I was backed in the lobby of Dorsett Regency Hotel KL and was given the key to my room. The room was a Junior Suite room and as I entered the room, I was in the living room and saw a sofa set with coffee table and another 2 chairs. There was a old CRT TV in the living room. The living room was spacious enough for 4 persons to sit comfortably but the carpet looks worn out. The bedroom was spacious with a king size bed, a large LCD TV opposite the bed and a small writing table. The king size bed looked and felt comfortable and clean. However, the carpet and the furniture seems old and again the carpet was worn out. I think the management should refurbished this room to make it look more updated and brighter. 2 of the table lamps were not working and the curtains also looked old. Overall the room was clean and neat and more importantly the bed was comfortable.

Junior Suite Room - Dorsett Regency Hotel KL

Since I was in the top floor, I have a good view of the city around the hotel from the window of my bedroom. However the windows in my room really need a good scrub to get rid of the dirt – otherwise the view from the windows should be crystal clear.  The mini fridge is all right and the bathroom was spacious and clean. There were ample towels and toiletries for me to use. The water pressure from the shower was strong and the towels were clean. The air conditioned was strong and in fact I felt cold and adjusted the temperature higher – perhaps it was due to the rainy weather on that day.  I felt that the Junior Suite room was comfortable and spacious and overall it was a pleasant stay.

The Dorsett Regency hotel KL is supposed to be a four star hotel but with this current standard it is not so. What this hotel needs is a renovation and a update on the rooms and the hotel lobby. For breakfast, I felt that it was sufficient. But you may have too wait if there are too many guests coming in at the same time for breakfast. The staff at the cafe do restocked food that runs out. It would be nice if they could add more quantity and variety of fruits and cooked vegetables.
